From fragmentation to alignment: Why telehealth societies must shape the next phase of global digital health

We are pleased to share article, coauthored by the International Society for Telemedicine and eHealth and Polish Telemedicine and e-Health Society members, titled „From fragmentation to alignment: Why telehealth societies must shape the next phase of global digital health”, in Volume 18, Issue 1 (2026) of the Finnish Journal of eHealth and eWelfare, available at https://doi.org/10.23996/fjhw.178234.

Abstract
National telehealth and eHealth societies are essential actors in digital transformation, yet their impact remains uneven, fragmented, and insufficiently coordinated. Drawing on trends across ten countries, including Finland, Germany, India, the Ivory Coast, Japan, Jordan, Morocco, Nigeria, Poland, and Slovenia, this opinion argues that these societies hold crucial but underused positions in global digital health governance. They contribute to evidence generation, regulatory discourse, workforce development, and the adaptation of digital solutions to local contexts. However, without structured mechanisms for collaboration, such strengths remain isolated and global disparities deepen. We propose that the International Society for Telemedicine and eHealth (ISfTeH) can evolve from a networking platform into an orchestrator that consolidates knowledge, reduces duplication, and supports equitable digital transformation. The future of telehealth depends not only on technological innovation but also on institutions’ capacity to share expertise, co-develop strategies, and build collective capabilities.

ISfTeH: Telemedicine and eHealth in Poland: Progress, Challenges, and Future Directions

The International Society for Telemedicine and eHealth (ISfTeH), in collaboration with the Polish Telemedicine and e-Health Society, invites participants to an upcoming webinar  (2026-04-13 12:00UTC online) devoted to recent developments in telemedicine, eHealth, and the broader digital transformation of healthcare in Poland.

The event forms part of the expanding ISfTeH webinar series organized by its national member societies. For readers of the Finnish Journal of eHealth and eWelfare, it may be seen as a continuation of the international exchange initiated by the January 2026 webinar, Effectiveness of Digital Health Care Services – Case Studies from Finland. That session brought together distinguished speakers from Finland, including leaders in academia and healthcare, who presented practical insights and real-world examples on the effectiveness of digital health services. Our upcoming Polish webinar offers a national perspective, focusing on Poland’s recent experience in digital health development.

The webinar will present Poland as a case study of dynamic change in digitally enabled healthcare. Particular attention will be given to the growth of teleconsultations, the implementation of e-prescriptions, the development of national eHealth infrastructure, and the emergence of AI-supported solutions in clinical practice. The discussion will address key challenges, including interoperability, quality evaluation, regulation, physician education, and the evolving role of Clinical Informatics and Digital Medicine -a specialty for physicians.

The draft programme includes contributions from presenters representing academia, professional organizations, public institutions, and industry. Together, these contributions will offer a broad overview of current progress in Polish telemedicine and eHealth, while also reflecting on unresolved systemic barriers, examples of practical innovation, and possible future directions.

More broadly, the webinar reflects ISfTeH’s continuing effort to strengthen international dialogue among national member societies and to share country-based experiences that may inform digital health policy, research, and practice across Europe and beyond.

Date: 13 April 2026 (Monday)
Time: 12:00 UTC / 14:00 CEST
Format: Online

Further details and registration information will be shared through ISfTeH communication channels.

Breaking Silos – Creating a Connected Health System in Nigeria

Join us on March 11th for this session which is part of a series of webinars, organized by national member societies of the International Society for Telemedicine & eHealth. In this edition, the Society for Telemedicine and eHealth in Nigeria (SFTeHIN) will discuss the connected health system in Nigeria.

The session will highlight the prevailing fragmentation among digital health solutions currently operating in Nigeria. Many providers offer great solutions, including telemedicine platforms, Electronic Medical Records, AI-driven tools, and patient-generated health data systems such as wearables. However, these solutions largely operate in silos. The data collected across these platforms are not sufficiently integrated to enable continuity of care, population health analytics, or improved patient outcomes – whether in preventive health or curative service delivery.

This session will underscore the systemic challenges posed by this lack of interoperability and emphasize the importance of adopting interoperable standards as a strategic pathway toward building a connected health ecosystem that delivers better health outcomes in Nigeria.

A guest speaker will provide an overview of what the connected health system in Nigeria looks like, assess the current state of digital health interoperability, and identify key structural and policy barriers limiting effective integration.

A panel of experts from the private, public and non-profit sectors will share cross-cutting insights and propose practical, system-level solutions from their respective perspectives.

  • Opening: Dr. Adeolu Arogundade, President, SFTeHIN.
  • ISfTeH Welcome Address: Dr. Michele Griffith, President, ISfTeH.
  • Guest Speaker: Breaking Silos – Creating A Connected Health System In Nigeria: Dr. Emeka Chukwu.
  • Panel Session – Creating A Connected Health System In Nigeria – Pathways To Success:
    • Dr. Folarin Olasogba.
    • Dr. Iniobong Ekong.
    • Mrs. Roseline Ilori.
    • Moderator: Dr. Raphael Akangbe.
  • Closing Remarks: Dr. Justin Ekpa.

IMIT@2024

Dear Colleague, Dear Friend,

Many people of our scientific community are involved in medical informatics and telemedicine, in general in ehealth or Digital Health since more than 40 years with research, innovation, education activities on computing in medicine, hospital information systems, artificial intelligence and data analytics in Health care. In this last 25 years we created a large network of experts in these scientific fields, participating to bilateral and multilateral projects , meetings, courses and schools at different levels National, euromediterranean and International. After several workshops and conference in many countries (Usa, UK,Egypt, Italy, Morocco, Canada, Australia, France, Romania, Lebanon, Israel, etc.). Just 10 years ago in Geneva we organized the Imit conference continuing in other cities until the period of Covid pandemic, organizing events in modality on line.

Now we want to continue in presence by means the next International Conference of our associated group of International Medical informatics and Telemedicine in Santa Cruz de Tenerife on next June 20-22. This appointment wants also to restart the development and comparison of projects and scientific initiatives expecially in this period of post Covid pandemic when many applications of telemedicine services have been used. Today the strong development of pratical systems of artificial intelligence applied to different social fields and even the Health care.

In attach the call for paper [1] of the Imit@ conference on next June and the registration form [2] for participation and for to become member of our International associated scientific community.
